What is Eczema?

Eczema is an aggravating condition that shows up as itchiness, blotchiness, cracking, red, or blistery skin. This problem is a result of a much bigger issue that occurs within the immune system. Some people will have these symptoms as children, and many of these people will go on to live normal adult lives. About half of the people with this problem at age five will have it as a lifelong condition. About one in three people develop this condition and deal with the side effects like intense itching.

Treating this problem is difficult whether it is as an adult or a child. The hardest part is that children experience different reactions than older people. The same person may have widely different breakout symptoms as the years progress.

There are several reasons people may develop eczema. The condition may arise from hereditary conditions parents pass on to children. Eczema often strikes people with allergies. Although children do not usually show signs of the condition before age five, the condition can affect infants.

Common Symptoms of Atopic Dermatitis or Other Forms of Eczema

Because the condition causes a diverse range of reactions, it may be difficult to figure out the problem when someone is itching. This sign is the most common with eczema, but it is not the only one. Here is how the condition presents itself by age:

Birth to Two Years Old
  • Breakouts along the face and especially in the scalp
  • Blisters that bust open and ooze
  • Regular skin infections
  • Constant rubbing or scratching - even when sleeping
For tiny ones, parents can use hand covers or mittens when babies are sleeping. These covers stop the nails from breaking open the skin. The infant will rub instead of scratch the area.

Age Three Up to Teenager
  • Breakouts in areas where there is moisture like behind the knees
  • Bumpy skin that presents itself in various colors ranging from light red to deep purple
  • Lichenification is a thickening of the skin in the area where the reaction is most prominent
  • Knots can form creating lifelong itchy spots
Preventing itching is essential in stopping the knotty areas. Sometimes, topical creams can reduce itchiness during flares. Acupuncture can help reduce breakouts.

Teenage to Adult
  • Rashes are prevalent all over the body especially around the neck or elbows
  • Extreme dry skin is an issue
  • Scratching can cause skin infections
  • Facial rashes are a considerable problem for many
  • Scaly spots with thick layers of skin grow quickly
  • Eye problems or dry skin may be present for some without the breakouts in others
Typical Causes of Eczema

While there is no one cause of eczema, the condition does have many similarities between those who have it. Allergies to household chemicals like detergents, shampoos, and cleaners are possible causes. Seasonal allergies may be common in people who have the condition.

While temperature changes are not a cause, they can make the itchiness spread, rashes to get worse, and the symptoms to flare up tremendously. Some foods, like dairy, soy, and wheat, can cause people to have symptoms. Hormones during periods and stress are two other things that can produce flare-ups.

Types of Eczema for Acupuncture Treatments

There are five major categories of this condition. The primary kind is atopic dermatitis, but each presents itself in different ways.
  • Neurodermatitis - People show symptoms after something else causes an itch. A bug bite or small abrasion may be all that is necessary to trigger the reaction. People often experience thick patches of scales in the area affected. Symptoms healthy occur on the neck, arms, wrists, elbows, or the feet and ankles.
  • Stasis Dermatitis - This condition presents problems in the lower limbs. Often, people with circulation issues in the legs develop an itchy rash and dry skin patches.
  • Allergic Contact Dermatitis - People with typical environmental allergies often develop this type of eczema. Usually, symptoms occur when a person touches or breathes in an irritant. If the body feels the detergent or spray cleaner is foreign, it will react with itchiness, blotchy skin, redness, irritation, and even blisters. All it takes is a person to come in contact with the irritant for a reaction to begin. The person may develop symptoms for several hours or days following the exposure.
  • Dyshidrotic Eczema - This form of eczema affects the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet. People with this type of condition usually experience blisters that are sore and itchy. Scratching these areas only makes the problem spread. It also increases the pain and makes the itching intense.
  • Nummular Eczema - This form of the condition shows up as scaly areas. Most people see the reaction in a circular form. The skin often appears crusty and itches a lot.
Acupuncture puts pressure on specific points along the body. Treating eczema consists of putting needles in the skin in positions where the problems are most prevalent. For example, eczema remedies may include using the crease of the elbow to reduce problems in the arms.
