Alpha-gal Allergy Treatments by Marc Bystock NYC Acupuncturist in Midtown Manhattan NY 10016

What is Alpha-gal Syndrome (AGS)?

  • Alpha-gal is a molecule found in several mammals.
  • Alpha-gal is never found in fish, birds, or people.
  • Alpha-gal is always in meat (beef, rabbit, lamb, venison, and pork) and products from these mammals (including gelatin, cow's milk, and other dairy products).
Causes of the Alpha-gal Allery

Alpha gal syndrome (AGS) is an acquired allergy to animal products from a tick bite that causes immune sensitization to an oligosaccharide in the meat. Alpha gal syndrome is the transmission of a sugar molecule from the Lone Star tick or other species.

Alpha gal allergic responses may vary from person to person, ranging from minor to severe anaphylaxis. Individuals may not have reactions to every exposure. Most publications on Alpha gal syndrome describe no intervention, except avoidance of the allergic substance(s). In other words, don't eat any meat or animal products.

There are no known vaccines, pharmaceuticals, or allergy shots for Alpha gal syndrome

Patient Testimonial

Belated thanks for curing not only my Alpha gal but allergies to dogs and cats! We had a great time in California and per your suggestion introduced meat products slowly over the last 5 weeks. I am thrilled to advise that I have had no adverse side effects to anything! We also had a rare opportunity to visit our relative who has a dog and 2 cats. We were never able to visit in her home due to allergies to her pets. You are truly a blessing and we have recommended you to friends here. Words cannot express how thankful we are!

Alpha-gal Allergy Treatments to Avoid Anaphylaxis by Marc Bystock NYC Acupuncturist in Midtown Manhattan NY 10016

Symptoms of Alpha-gal Syndrome

Common symptoms of Alpha-gal Syndrome include an allergic reaction whenever eating meat, nausea, heartburn, drop in blood pressure, headaches, hives, explosive diarrhea, difficulty breathing, cramps, bloating, swelling of the throat, lips, mouth, or eyes, dizziness, faintness, severe stomach pain and indigestion.

Severe reactions may lead to anaphylaxis.

Symptoms may appear within minutes or up to 6 hours after ingestion of meat or dairy or exposure to any alpha-gal containing products (gelatin).
The severity of any allergic reaction may vary from a low-level irritation to a full anaphylaxis emergency. Allergic rhinitis may cause itching, sneezing, conjunctivitis, and sneezing.  Food allergies may cause swelling around the mouth, lips, and face and anaphylaxis.

Allergic reactions to pharmaceuticals may cause hives anywhere around the body, wheezing, and anaphylaxis.
Allergies to insects, their bites, and stings may result in edema, redness, hives, shortness of breath, and anaphylaxis. Eczema may result in dry, red itchy, and scaly skin.

Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic condition that may result in nausea, low blood pressure, shortness of breath, tachycardia, and dizziness. Anaphylaxis may require an epinephrine injection and emergency hospitalization.
Who Can Get Alpha-gal Syndrome (AGS)?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, anyone can get Alpha gal. However, most cases occur in the Northeast, Eastern, Southeast, and Central United States. The prevention of tick bites is the most important step to take to avoid Alpha gal syndrome. Avoid grassy areas, woods, or anywhere ticks may be found. Wear appropriate clothing treated with anti-tick repellents. When you come in from the outdoors, shower and wash your clothing. Check your pets for ticks when they come in from the outside.
